2021年毕业典礼致辞

It is now my privilege to address the Class of 2021 on the occasion of your commencement.  2017年，你和我一起来到这里.  我们共同度过了难忘的四年, 包括过去的15个月, 这些都超出了我们的想象.  所以在这里和你们在一起是一种特别的快乐, 亲临现场, 在这一天，标志着你们从太阳城集团和李学院的学生成长为毕业生.

Consider the class of 1918, whose four years at Washington 和 Lee coincided with World War I.  那一年只有55名高年级学生获得了毕业证书, 在李教堂举行的一个阴沉的仪式上, where empty spaces were left for classmates who were fighting in the trenches in Europe.

大学就是这样鬼鬼祟祟的.  它会在你不注意的时候塑造你.  You arrive fresh from high school 和 meet complete strangers who become your lifelong friends.  You spend four years going about your business:  taking classes; sharing meals; singing, 跳舞, 和 acting; practicing 和 competing; working in the community; exploring Rockbridge County; basking in the sun on front campus.

沉浸在那些日常经历中, you become young adults – women 和 men increasingly capable of making meaningful differences – almost by accident.  先生. Duchossois说，你在不知情的情况下建立了一种生活方式.  这是教育的重要任务.

一是互联互通的深度.  And the fact that being bound to each other is both essentially human 和 unavoidably dangerous.  The rapid 和 relentless spread of the virus demonstrated how tightly the world is connected.  没有一个地方, 然而远程, was exempt from the natural forces 和 social behaviors that spread disease around the globe.  同样普遍的还有恐惧、悲伤和孤独.  因为在一起的风险太大了, 我们发现自己越来越孤单, 这给我们留下了深刻的印象，我们是多么需要彼此.

The p和emics of 1918 和 2021 punctured the comforting illusion that we live in a bubble here in our bucolic valley.  列克星敦是个小镇.  石桥是一个乡村.  但我们已经看到地球上任何地方发生的事情是如何影响我们所有人的.  And we have learned that when things are difficult, we have to rely on one another more than ever.  This difficult year has powerfully reinforced the importance of community 和 taught us that sustaining community requires our active participation.

The mission of Washington 和 Lee University includes preparing graduates for “eng年龄d citizenship in a global 和 diverse society.“如果我们成功了, you will leave this place not merely prepared but downright e年龄r to eng年龄 with the communities that await beyond you the confines of our nonexistent bubble.

我被格雷格·帕克的方式打动了, 音乐系主任, described the value of the flexibility 和 resilience shown by his students: “If they can deal with these challenges, they’re going to be a whole lot more equipped to deal with the curveballs that life is going to throw when they get out of W&L，这就是他们改变世界的原因.”

A liberal arts education, even at its best, cannot not prepare you for everything you will encounter.  But it does make you the kind of person who responds well to encounters for which you are not prepared.  就像百年一遇的流行病.  应对突发事件的能力, 你已经证明了这一点吗, 提高你终身学习的前景, 成就, 领导, 服务, 和国籍.
